In July 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with choreographers and directors at Trinity Laban on the costume design for two innovative dance pieces. The experience allowed me to merge my passion for upcycling, deconstruction, and movement with the choreography brought to life by talented dancers.
The first piece focused on deconstruction, where we repurposed preloved shirts and trousers. The dancers wore these reworked garments, which unraveled and reformed with their movements, symbolizing the fluidity and transformation of both the clothing and the dancers' expressions. This piece was a visual testament to the dynamic nature of upcycling.
For the second piece, I took an experimental approach, transforming a pair of trousers into a sculptural onesie, incorporating woven textures with the help of Freeweaver Studio. This design, blending traditional and modern techniques, complemented the choreography and moved in an almost otherworldly way with the dancers.
Both pieces featured 40 dancers in redesigned costumes, bringing an eco-conscious element to the performance while making a powerful statement about sustainability and creativity in the arts. The project was a fulfilling journey of collaboration, and I’m excited to share the photos from the performance, which capture the energy and creativity that made this experience so special.
