**Collaboration and Creativity: My Work with Trinity Laban Costume Design**
Last July 2024, I had the fantastic opportunity to collaborate with the incredible choreographers and directors at Trinity Laban, working on the costume design for two standout dance pieces. The experience was nothing short of inspiring, as I was able to merge my passion for upcycling, deconstruction, and movement with the innovative choreography brought to life by talented dancers.
The first piece was an exploration of deconstruction, where we reimagined preloved shirts and trousers. It was about more than just repurposing fabric—it was about how clothing could transform with movement. The dancers wore these reworked garments, and as they moved, the pieces unraveled and reformed in ways that mirrored the fluidity and unpredictability of the performance itself. The deconstruction of the clothes symbolized the raw and evolving nature of the dancers' expressions, creating a visual connection between the human body and the garment. The energy from the stage was electric, and watching the dancers interact with the fabric was truly mesmerizing. It was a beautiful testament to how upcycling can breathe new life into garments, turning them into something dynamic and ever-changing.
For the second piece, I took a more experimental approach, turning a pair of trousers into a sculptural onesie with woven additions. I was lucky enough to work with Freeweaver Studio, a local craft studio based in Deptford, who helped me weave intricate textures into the garment. The result was something that felt both innovative and rooted in tradition—a fusion of techniques that mirrored the piece’s choreography. The dancers, moving in these intricate designs, embodied the essence of the work, as the fabric moved with them in a striking, almost otherworldly way.
Both pieces featured 40 dancers, all wearing redesigned preloved costumes, which not only brought an eco-conscious element to the performance but also made a powerful statement about sustainability and creativity in the arts. The entire process was an inspiring journey of collaboration, from the first discussions with the choreographers to the final dress rehearsal. It was truly amazing to see my designs come to life in such a dynamic and impactful way.
I’m excited to share some of the incredible pictures from the performance, which I think capture the energy and creativity that went into this project. It was a privilege to be a part of such a groundbreaking performance, and I can’t wait for more opportunities to blend sustainability with art and movement.
